The publication of the White Paper ‘Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS' and the subsequent Health and Social Care Bill have placed GPs and other clinicians at the heart of healthcare commissioning and the stewardship of NHS resources (more than £60 billion of public money). The task of Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) is to deliver a sustainable healthcare system in the face of the most significant financial challenge in generations, whilst maintaining quality, amidst a changing organisational environment. Medical advances offer increasing opportunities to treat disease but the cost of these advances together with an ageing population will prove very challenging and will require careful planning. In order to succeed, Commissioners will need to carefully consider efficiencies and productivity opportunities across the whole healthcare system, and work in partnership with other key clinicians, social services and patient representatives to integrate services and redesign patient pathways.
Redditch and Bromsgrove CCG (RBCCG) represents 23 GP practices across Redditch and Bromsgrove with a combined registered population of circa 170,000 patients. The 23 GP practices have a history of working together as part of a Practice Based Commissioning Cluster (since 2006) which has provided a strong foundation for the initial infrastructure supporting the development and future direction of RBCCG.
